HOLLYWOOD MEETS INTERIOR DESIGN

THE GREAT GATSBY

The 1925 novel written by Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby a book that motivated loads of creative minds in the making, such ones got inspired by the novel and moved forward into the film editions. The first-ever movie was made in 1974 by Jack Clayton, where people saw the book win life the first time. Later on, in 2013 a recent reedition of The Great Gatsby was produced by Baz Luhrmann, and this one managed to win several awards in the Oscar edition of 2014. One of the awards goes to production design by Catherine Martin and set decoration by Beverly Dunn.

The Art Deco-inspired by on the modern machine age and showcased geometric, angular and streamlined motifs like zigzags and chevrons. It is no wonder why Catherine Martin, wife of director Baz Luhrmann won two Academy Awards for the movie The Great Gatsby. Martin's set designs show the grandest and elegant forums of the Art Deco period as opposed to the Deco hotels on Miami Beach with more kitschy air with a tropical flair.

CASABLANCA

Time-travelling into 1942 where Casablanca produced by Michael Curtiz managed to win several Academy Awards in 1944, it did not win the Best Art Direction award, but it still managed to work out as an inspiration source for creative minds in contemporary interior design.

Rick Café the interior design of the cafe back at the time, amazes every interior design aficionado, with Palms in the corners, hanging brass chandeliers, floral table lamps and a baby grand piano tucked into an archway lend to the period-authentic mise-en-scène. The whole design of the cafe, with Arabic style partitions fused with the chairs, the floor tiles, everything seemed like it was born and it meant to be connected by a wire of Arabian origins that helped on making Casablanca a huge success.

A significant feature of both the original ship and movie version was the grand staircase. The solid wooden stairs contain wrought iron bannisters in the Louis XIV style. The newel feature high-relief panels with pineapple finials. At the bottom of the stairs, on the central newel post, there is a bronze cherub holding a torch. As one reaches the landing, wood carvings are surrounding a clock. Above the stairs, is a wrought iron and glass dome which allows for natural light to enter the space.

The house is well-maintained, bright and opulent, with lots of mouldings, wood panelling and antiques throughout. Scarlett O’Hara’s bedroom shows a large-fluted fireplace, a four-poster bed and French antique furniture.

This was one of the effects of their production set. There’s sort of a neo-Classical style to some of the used furniture. This room resembles a space on Earth, with Renaissance paintings and sculptures, a sort of neo-Baroque style furniture, and most notably glowing floor tiles.

METROPOLIS

Industrial meets art-deco. Yes, the 1927 movie produced by Fritz Lang, a monocle-wearing Austrian who started making weird films after World War One. Following the german expressionist style, Metropolis sets in a terrifying dystopia, the then-distant year 2000. Mega-rich overlords swan about in pleasure gardens and palaces, while deep below the earth are the armies of semi-human workers, who live only to serve the great machines that power the city.

Despite advances in filmmaking technology, no other film has surpassed Metropolis in terms of its impact on production design.  Lang’s eye for magnificent set pieces and special effects resulted in memorable images, notably the immense skyscrapers that dominate the skyline of Metropolis.

Inspired by the Streamline Moderne that emerged in the 30s and became an influence on design and architecture, the Streamline Suspension emphasizes forms and long lines combined to create a stylish ambience. For instance, it seems like you have a skyscraper in both sides of the suspension.
